What are the qualities of an ideal program manager? This position requires more than merely handling many projects at the same time.
The role of the program manager is a strategic one that demands the candidate to have leadership abilities and a long-term vision that helps move the program, initiative, or department ahead.
A successful program manager must have the ability to deal with the sometimes conflicting nature of his job.
Here are some examples:
- Revolution while maintaining stability. The ability to diffuse tensions, bring back order, and get the project back on track is an essential competency for program managers. Simultaneously, they must be creative thinkers who develop new and improved methods of doing things. The interruption that is caused by innovation opens the door for the solution of new problems.
- Focus on the big picture while you’re working.The management of the program has to be able to understand the big picture and how the resource capacity into the overall strategy of the organization. There will be occasions when the program director must have a firm grasp of the technology and the project. Who else will be concerned with the specifics if he isn’t?
